Solvent Extraction Plants

In large-scale industrial processing, solvent extraction is widely used for suitable oilseeds and prepared materials. The prepared flakes or press cake are brought into contact with a solvent, conventionally hexane in many industrial plants. The solvent dissolves the oil, producing a mixture known as miscella. The miscella is subsequently separated and processed to recover the oil. The solvent is recovered and recycled within the process.

Solvent extraction can achieve high oil recovery, making it particularly important in large-scale oilseed-processing operations.

Pre-Pressing and Solvent Extraction

Some plants combine both technologies. In a pre-press solvent-extraction process, mechanical pressing first removes a substantial proportion of the oil. Solvent Extraction then recovers the remaining oil in the press cake. This integrated approach combines the advantages of mechanical pressing and solvent extraction and can provide high overall oil recovery.
